Todos os dias nas últimas duas semanas visitei o site do War Nerd para saber o que Gary Brecher tinha a dizer sobre a guerra Israel x Hezbolá. O War Nerd é a coluna que Brecher escreve no Exile, descoberta do Mojo, que, como eu e Brecher, acredita que a guerra, a despeito do horror, da matança e etc, comporta certa beleza e é terrivelmente interessante quando se trata de movimentações de tropas, estratégias, escaramuças e batalhas de tanques.

Brecher, em resumo, acha que os alemães são uns malditos porque, com a Segunda Guerra, terminaram com o mais tradicional dos esportes europeus, que eram combaterem uns aos outros desde mais ou menos três séculos antes. E também que a África é o último reduto das guerras tradicionais, sem os bombardeios que os Estados Unidos - e agora até Israel - passaram a usar como estratégia principal. Não deve ser muito popular entre os sensíveis, já que usa frases como "Liberian history is supposedly 'tragic', which is newspaper code for 'funny as Hell'". Escreve de um jeito engraçado.

Entre Hezbolá e Israel, o segundo, diz ele, está condenado à derrota. Enquanto Israel bombardeia cidades e diz que também ataca o Hezbolá, ninguém ao mesmo tempo vê as imagens dos militantes mortos. Israel mostra os dentes, ameaça, mas não invade o Líbano, onde "mártires" do Hezbolá esperam seus militares. O Hezbolá vai vencer porque não é uma milícia, mas um movimento de massas. O final do texto resume tudo o que eu podia dizer sobre os bombardeios no Líbano. Não são lógicos, não têm objetivos, são fruto da falta de uma idéia melhor. Nada mais.

"The men who run Hezbollah attacked because they finally figured out that they literally cannot lose. The IDF can never expel Hezbollah from South Lebanon, because it's a genuine mass movement, as committed and crazy at the roots as at the top. If Israel holds off, then Hezbollah becomes the one victorious Arab/Muslim force in the world, darling of every little nine-year-old Jihadi in Jakarta and Khartoum. If Israel retaliates by blasting every target of value in Lebanon, every TV tower and shopping mall and freeway...well, that's the beauty of the plan: the Shia are the poorest of the poor. They don't own any of that shit anyway. They sit back and laugh watching their neighbors' stuff that they've envied all their lives get blown away -- and it's the Israelis who get the blame".
