Cosmonautas do Amor

Resposta ao russo que escreveu perguntando do Basta de Estopa.

Dear Vadim Makarov

"Basta de Estopa" was a project held by a group of 32 brave young men (better known as The Cosmonauts of Love) during a hot december afternoon in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The goal was to record an a capella version of the soviet anthem entirely in Portuguese. The lyrics are mostly nonsense based in the phonetic similarities between russian and portuguese. There are no expletives nor russian words in the lyrics, except one occurence of the word "vodka").

At first, the project was nothing but a way to enjoy the company of friends in an absurd way. Inspired by the brave, valiant and thoughtless spirit of Eduardo Menezes - who alone gathered a flock of 31 young men that who had nothing better to do in a sunny saturday afternoon - an assorted variety of young south brazilian adults united in a small record studio to sing the anthem under an atrocious 50°C heat. They were strictly and stalinisticly forbidden to wear any shirt color but red, and their reward at the end of almost of 2 hours of vocal preparation and singing was a watermelon and a bottle of vodka. Much to their surprise, the project achieved success in the small community of Porto Alegre, gaining various Google references and even overseas recognition for the hilarity and pointlessness of it.

There isn't a translation of this anthem version in english yet, but we're looking forward for it. We'll send you as soon as it is finished.

Thank you for your interest!
